Understanding Alert Types
Warnings are issued when geomagnetic activity at a certain level is expected. Alerts mean a threshold has actually been reached. Watches are longer-range outlooks, often issued days ahead for predicted geomagnetic storms.
A higher Kp threshold or G-storm level means the aurora may become visible from lower latitudes than usual.
