About Aurora Calculator
Aurora Calculator is a free tool for anyone hoping to see the northern or southern lights. It turns raw space weather data into a simple answer to the question every aurora chaser asks: is tonight worth going outside?
Most aurora data online is aimed either at scientists, with dense charts and jargon, or at casual viewers, with little real detail. We built Aurora Calculator to serve both: a clean live map and clear city forecasts for travelers, backed by genuine data for those who want to dig deeper.
Where Our Data Comes From
All space weather information is sourced from the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, a public service of the United States government. This includes the planetary Kp index, the OVATION auroral model, and official geomagnetic storm alerts. We process this data into city-level forecasts and visualizations.
What We Cover
The site features a live global aurora map, a three-day Kp forecast, real-time storm alerts, and dedicated forecast pages for eleven aurora destinations. Our trip planner helps you choose when and where to travel for the best chance of a display.
How the Site Is Funded
Aurora Calculator is free to use. It is supported by advertising and by affiliate links for travel bookings. If you book a hotel or tour through one of our links, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. This is what keeps the forecast free for everyone.
